0:00Your next favorite survival game might exist because one director said nobody else was making anything like it, recruit. Game director Bruce Straley stated in 2012 that no other developers were making character-driven survival action games before The Last of Us' release. Since then, its influence has spawned numerous similar titles, including The Plague Tale, Dying Light, and Days Gone. It also inspired design elements in God of War, Ragnarok, and the Resident Evil remakes.
0:32Here's my take. Then, a quiet, character-first survival game was a lonely bet with nothing to copy. Now, it's a crowded shelf and a whole genre. That's why I back bold ideas over battle passes every time: ideas build genres, paywalls don't. Funny how nobody turned into everybody. Here's your move, recruit: pick one of those games you haven't played, spot what it borrowed from the original, and decide which one did it best. Game on, guild.
